PEO Perspective: May 2022

We’re embarking on another busy spring and summer with a number of leadership and program transitions.

LEADERSHIP TRANSITIONS

We closed out April with the Army Vantage Relinquishment of Charter, in which Ms. Miranda Coleman – a 2021 FED 100 recipient, and the program’s originating product lead since it was stood up in March 2020 – relinquished the reins of responsibility and leadership to Col. Rob Wolfe, program manager for Army Data and Analytics Platforms (ARDAP), the parent project office for Army Vantage.

Miranda’s efforts have had a far-reaching and indelible impact across the Army at all levels, leading the program for the Army’s data-driven operations and decision-making platform. By joining and enriching millions of data points into artificial intelligence/machine learning-capable applications, Army Vantage improves and accelerates decisions for everything from personnel readiness to financial return on investment. Today, thousands of operators across the Army -- including senior leaders, Soldiers, staff and analytic communities -- use Army Vantage to improve the efficiency and accuracy of their work.

Please join me in thanking Miranda, and wishing her luck in her new role as acquisition advisor for the Artificial Intelligence and Integration Center at Army Futures Command.  

On May 19, Army Vantage and our AESIP Hub program will be rolled up into our new Army Data Platform — or ADP — product office within ARDAP. ADP will assume both the Army Vantage and Hub missions, and directly support PM ARDAP to provide data critical to mission success. Product Lead Lt. Col. Laura-Jane (LJ) Freeland is a familiar face to us, having previously served as assistant product manager for Project Manager DoD Biometrics when it was aligned to PEO EIS.  Lt. Col. Freeland also served on the ASA(ALT) staff as a Department of the Army Systems Coordinator (DASC), and as Executive Officer to the Deputy for Acquisition Systems Management (DASM), among other roles. She most recently completed a Training with Industry Fellowship. Welcome, LJ -- we are glad to have you back!

Product Director Enterprise Services (PD ES) will kick off a busy leadership transition month at PEO EIS as Mr. Lee James, current product director, relinquishes the charter in a ceremony May 2. I am very pleased to announce that Lee was selected as the Assistant Program Executive Officer for Business Mission Area (APEO BMA), assuming the role from Mr. Dan Joyce, who leaves PEO EIS to become the director for mission command for ASA(ALT).

Dan’s contributions to the PEO EIS mission are incalculable. Dan's prior service at ASA(ALT) as deputy director for mission command will undoubtedly serve him well in his new assignment, as will his more recent experience serving as EIS's APEO for Networks, Cyber and Services (NCS) and as APEO BMA. In his new role, Dan will be supporting both EIS and PEO C3T, so we will continue to work closely with him. Please join me in wishing him well!

As Lee steps into the APEO BMA role, Mr. Sergio Alvarez will step up to serve as Acting Project Director for ES until a selectee is chosen. A big thank you and congratulations to Sergio as well, who has deftly managed several transitions and increasing levels of responsibility. I have full faith in his ability to carry out and lead the important ES mission.

SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS AND EVENTS

This month, APEO NCS John Howell and I are participating in panels focused on Unified Network Operations and Delivering the Data Centric Environment and Enabling the Cloud at the U.S. Army Network Technical Exchange Meeting (TEM) 8, sponsored by the Network CFT and PEO C3T, May 9-10 in Philadelphia. From May 13-14, PEO EIS will host the Unified Network Summit with senior Army cyber and signal leaders to review the direction and priorities for fiscal years 2022/2023 in optimizing and setting the Army Unified Network. We look forward to welcoming Army CIO Dr. Raj Iyer, Deputy Chief of Staff, G-6 Lt. Gen. John Morrison, ARCYBER Commanding General Lt. Gen. Maria Barrett and many others to this important discussion. 

MAY OBSERVATIONS

This month, we celebrate Asian-American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, honoring Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders whose rich heritage has helped to influence and shape the history of the United States and the military in which more than 65,000 serve Active Duty.

May is also Military Appreciation Month. We will celebrate Military Spouse Appreciation Day on May 6, recognizing the strength and sacrifice of military spouses. On May 21, we honor our military members and their families as we celebrate Armed Forces Day. We close the busy month of military pride with the Memorial Day holiday on May 30. As we gather with our families for this day of reflection, I hope you will join me in remembering and giving thanks for those who served and made the ultimate sacrifice. We are forever grateful for their bravery.
