LIS and ALTESS collaborate on migration of Standard Army Ammunition System
PEO EIS’s Logistics Information Systems (LIS) product office — part of the Army Data and Analytics Platforms (ARDAP) portfolio — recently collaborated with the Acquisition, Logistics and Technology Enterprise Systems and Services (ALTESS) product office — part of PEO EIS’s Enterprise Services portfolio — to migrate the Standard Army Ammunition System (SAAS) production environment to the ALTESS data center.
Originally hosted at a network enterprise center (NEC), SAAS’s production environment was moved to ALTESS on December 9, 2020 to comply with an Army execution order. The migration involved a database containing thousands of data elements. Before making the switch, LIS spent several months defining the support agreement with ALTESS, building and configuring the new production environment, establishing new production plans and schedules for trading partners, validating communications and services between servers, obtaining required security certificates, establishing post-production support agreements with trading partners, and testing connectivity, including with customers in the field.
LIS has seven trading partners, including the Total Ammunition Management Information System, Worldwide Ammunition Reporting System-Munitions History Program, National Level Ammunition Capability, Army Enterprise Systems Integration Program Hub, Munitions Readiness Reporting, Munitions History Program and Army Vantage.
According to SAAS system lead Kevin McKenzie, migrating to the ALTESS data center has provided some performance improvements for the Army’s web-based management, reporting and accounting system for ammunition systems.
“Migrating to ALTESS improved our system performance by upgrading our operating system, adding faster central processing units and increasing memory availability,” said McKenzie. “In the end, it’s all about supporting modernization and readiness for our Soldiers, and every second counts, especially when you’re managing ammunition.”
Besides hosting SAAS, ALTESS hosts 14 other PEO EIS systems.
